Impressions on Injustice: Gods Among Us

I don’t like fighting games much. I’ve always wanted to like them. I just suck at fighters. But of late we’ve seen a resurgence of the genre, and that’s a good thing, because it’s damn fun!

Injustice: Gods Among Us isn’t a new game, having released on all consoles back in April of 2013. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a good time. For PC gamers looking to do a little couch gaming or rock Big Picture mode, this is the title for you. Right now you can find it on Amazon or Steam for around ten bucks. But if you’re patient, you can nab the title for a cool five. Regardless of what you pay, this game is worth it. Made by NetherRealm studios, the team behind the Mortal Combat series, combat to veterans of those games will find themselves at home. What Injustice does that’s different from most fighting games though, is that it allows you to interact with  quite a few things in the background.

Crime Alley

See a car? Well, if your character is strong enough, you can grab it and smash your opponent. Knock another player into a helicopter or beat them with a tree by a simple button press. Finishers can also be done at any point in the match as power moves. Build up your characters meter and you can unleash a devastating attack. You can also use that meter to power-up some attacks, dealing out extra damage with each hit. Players can also opt to use some of their precious power in “wagers,” where they’ll get a damage bonus or even recover some health.

On the nostalgia train, most of the voice cast for the game are the same actors and actresses behind your favorite characters from Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Teen Titans.

Wonderwoman

Wonder Woman is easily the hardest tough-talking bitch in town! Love her!

Comic fans will be in for a treat as the campaign offers a pretty decent story, even if the whole thing devolves around a fighting game. In comic terms, it’s still some pretty epic stuff, and I found myself excited with each new chapter.

From a game-play standpoint, the title seems deceptively simple, but as you learn each character, you’ll discover their particular strengths and weaknesses. As far as I can tell, there’s light, medium, and heavy characters, with the latter two categories often being able to lift objects, though there’s a few light ones (looking at you Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman) who pack quite a punch!

Playing as some of these heroes has only reaffirmed my love for DC and made me want to read more comics on the various characters in the game. This is an alternate timeline to the standard DC fare, seemingly an Elseworlds title where players are faced with a “What if?” scenario. In a nutshell, Joker exposes Superman to some of Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Superman then kills what he thinks to be Doomsday, only to find out it was Louis Lane who was pregnant with their unborn child. To make matters worse, when her heart stops, a sensor Joker implanted in her sends a signal that detonates a nuke in Metropolis, causing Superman to lose his shit and kill Joker. What ensues is a rift in the Justice League, where one side, led by Superman wants no more wars or crime, and will do anything, including making the world into a police-state, to ensure peace. The other side, led by Batman, believes that going down that road is too far, setting the stage for your favorite heroes and villains to pummel each other senseless. And it’s so fun!

Also do yourself a favor and check out the comics that serve as a prequel for this game as they are awesome. They’re definitely dark, like the game, but I strongly recommend you check those out as they’re still going strong!

Anyhoo, I’ve been pretty pleased with the game. It’s fun solo or with friends, but it definitely shines if you’ve got another person to play with. From what I’ve read, playing online sucks, as it uses a peer-to-peer hosting system (I believe) and the latency is terrible. That’s a shame, as a strong online component would definitely help with this game. Regardless, there’s plenty of content to be had here, various mini-games, along with multiple variants of the typical fighting gauntlet. All are great at teaching you the core mechanics of the game though, and I love how the title allows you to tag various moves and have them on-screen as you fight, allowing you to learn the nuances of each character. You can even record clips in-game to perfect your tactics. Performance-wise, the two things I found that worked for improving controller latency were running the game in windowed-mode and having “release check” off. As you’d expect, the game features native 360 controller support, which is what I use at the moment. Not sure about the plethora of other input devices, but most of you reading this will probably have an xbox controller, so you should be good.

Upprecut!

Long and short, Injustice is a great game. Nab the Ultimate Edition as it has all the costume variants for your favorite characters. Comic and fighter fans will be pleased alike as this is a solid game that keeps me playing – for just one more round.
