So I took the lad and missus to see Thor’s latest outing on the big screen. I enjoyed the first Thor film, though many of my friends had mixed feelings, or disliked it entirely.
With such a rocky start, does the sequel improve upon the original?
Yes and no.
I felt the first Thor was witty and humorous, with decent pacing and solid special effects. The Dark World certainly improves upon the original in the visual department. But it lacks the character development of the first movie. That’d be forgivable if The Dark World really delivered on the action.
But it doesn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, there were some great fights and chases to be seen. But the whole film kept feeling like it was building towards something that never happens. Sure, we’re given fascinating glimpses of the culture and world Thor hails from, but there’s never much explanation given as to what we’re shown. The movie felt more like filler, as The Dark World is clearly laying the groundwork for what’s to come in the Marvel Universe. As a result, we’re given a movie that feels hollow.
The humor’s not quite there, the acting is mediocre, and the villain is ho-hum. By the time you get to the end of the movie, the half-assed resolution is accepted because the entire film felt empty. The good guy has to win, because he’s the good guy. That’s how things work, right?
But there are some good points, the main one being Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki. Thor’s adopted brother remains humorous, evil, and at times, even a tad noble. But the energy Hiddleston brings to screen isn’t enough to save The Dark World. Truth is, it’s just not a good movie. Fans of the franchise will certainly enjoy The Dark World, but I think it’s living under the shadow of the last (and upcoming) Avengers film. Do yourself a solid and check this one out as a rental.
