Sirius Radio’s Lithium channel has been playing all things from The Offspring this weekend. Lithium also had a special where they played the band’s third album, Smash from beginning to end, with commentary from lead singer Dexter Holland and lead guitarist, Noodles. The Offspring is currently on tour, playing the entirety of Smash live. Deets on tour dates, which are nearing an end.
Anyhoo, Smash is the first album I had. A friend gave me a mixed tape with a few of its songs. “Bad Habit, Nitro, Come Out and Play,” and “Self Esteem” were the first songs of theirs I heard. I soon bought the CD, which I have to this day. The Offspring will always have a special place in my heart, as they’re the band the kicked off my love for rock. I hope to see them live sometime, but until then, I’ll just have to be content with their music I have at home. For those who haven’t heard it, Smash is one of those rare albums that’s amazing from start to finish. It really encapsulates the essence of 90’s rock and what was happening in Punk and Grunge at the time. We may not have time machines, but Smash certainly gives a glimpse into that time, at least as far as music goes. I can’t help but smile when I hear it as so many memories come flooding back to me – the joy of childhood, the confusion of adolescence, and the feeling of ownership… that these guys, The Offspring, were a group of guys who just “got it” and weren’t afraid to say what they thought.
Apologies for my absence the last few weeks. But there were car troubles on my end, along with the death of internet at our house (both of which have fortunately been remedied). The car issue could have been very serious, as I was driving with my family on the highway, and at the last minute decided to pull off for some delicious Starbucks. As we were pulling up to the drive-through, it felt like we hit a pot hole. I couldn’t move the car forward any further and got out. This is what I saw:
The front left wheel broke off!
Fortunately, me and the family were (and are) okay. Coffee literally saved our lives!
Someone was certainly looking out for us. And for that, I am thankful, as I can continue to write about all the fun things in the world. And do that living thing… that’s pretty great, too!
Anyhoo, on with the Geek.
