This Week in Geek – Optimize that Shit!

In case you haven’t read it, check out my post on The Man in The High CastleIt’s certainly on of Amazon’s most fascinating entries. But for this (infrequent) Week in Geek, I’ve got some fantastic tips I’ve dug up to optimize two of my favorite games on PC. The first relates to a title near and dear to my heart, Red Orchestra 2. I found a lot of tweaks at the subreddit for the game, the most fascinating of which is being able to change the body timer for games. Surprisingly, this’ll actually give you a tactical advantage, as you can figure out where snipers and other camping bastards are. Be forewarned though, you’ll have to work with this to find the ideal setting as, you guessed it, increasing the bodies too much can lower your frame-rate. So use caution.

RO2

Probably not a good idea to take the stairs!

I will say though, that this is pretty damn important for a game where you can buy the farm in one or two shots. They also have some fantastic things like tweaking your Field of View (not sure if this was patched in-game to allow up to 90 degrees, but you can do it yourself if not) along with making the HUD even more minimalistic, allowing for a more immersive experience. All the fantastic tweaks for Red Orchestra 2 can be found here

Titanfall

The second order of business on the agenda pertains to one of my favorite titles – Titanfall (finally reached Gen. 5 today – woo hoo)! There’s a lot of things you can do for the title to seriously improve frame-rate, the easiest of which is adding a series of command lines to the Game Properties tab before you launch the game. I was also surprised to find that tweaking some audio settings will also help performance. While I haven’t found about this particular issue in regards to console versions, I imagine if the option’s there and you turn it off. it’ll also allow you to squeeze some frame rates out of your box.. Be forewarned that the article is a tad dated (written around Update 4, I believe – we’re currently at 8 or 9), it’s still useful. I found that the article, along with reading up on the various anti-aliasing  settings and adjusting them accordingly, helped me run a steady 60 fps with everything else running at max. I could probably run it faster, but I use V-Sync. PC gamers, don’t hate me. I’ve just come to hate screen tearing for some titles (mainly SP). This is one of the rare MP ones that I can’t stand it for, however. Anyhoo, you can find the full article on Titanfall tweaks here

Well folks, that’s it for now. As always, thanks for reading. Until next time!
