Interview with Adrian Corpuz

The following is a transcript from an email correspondence I had with Adrian Corpuz, a fantastic indie developer. Check it out!

Tyrus: Let’s start off with you telling me about yourself, what you do, and how you got into developing indie games!

Adrian: I’m Adrian Corpuz. I’m from the Philippines and I work as a front-end web developer (day job). I make games during my free time and on weekends.

The Pokemon Red on the Game Boy Color back then got me interested in game making. It’s a fresh one for me. I always play arcade games on the NES. But it’s only when I went to college that I learned how to program. Ever since I’ve been making small games, but only last year (2013) that I got to show one.

Tyrus: Very cool. What did you show? Was it for a competition?

Adrian: It’s an android game (officially my first game), Dodge Beat. And to answer your second question it was not for a competition :)

Tyrus: Very cool! Did you work on that alone or did you collaborate with someone on the project?

Adrian: I worked on it alone. I was pretty new to game development back then :D

 Mordecai and Rigby

tyrus: Nice! Have you released any other games since then?

Adrian: Yep! But mostly, the games after that were jam games.

Tyrus: How many games have you made Adrian?

Adrian: I made nine games so far :) But most of them were small games made during game jams.

Tyrus: What one are you most proud of?

Adrian: The one I’m most proud of was Grey Island. It’s my first title I made for a game jam. I’m currently making a polished version of it for mobile :)

Tyrus: Awesome! What genre is it?

Adrian: It’s an exploration game… kind of like an action-less Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. Basically, you collect items, sell them and buy tools to open new paths (sometimes, trade them). :)

Tyrus: Are you doing this alone or with a team?

Adrian: I’m doing Grey Island alone :D

Tyrus: Excellent! What’s the hardest part about game development, in your opinion?

Adrian: For me, it’s finishing the game. Starting it is easy, because there’s the hype that motivates me to make it. :D

Tyrus: What’s the most rewarding part  of game development for you?

Adrian: That would be finally making something (a feature) work after hours and hours of trying to get it the way you want. It’s always an awesome feeling when that happens :)

Tyrus: I bet! Where do you see yourself in five years?

Adrian: Still making games. But working in a game studio as an indie dev. :)

Tyrus: Nice! Closing out, any advice to aspiring game devs out there?

Adrian: Start small, be patient, and keep working. :)

Tyrus: Thanks for your time!

Adrian: No problem. Thank you!
